GentleMax Pro Laser Hair Removal in Japan

Looking for medical laser hair removal with the GentleMax Pro in Japan? At Houreisen Skin Clinic, we assess your skin tone, hair thickness, treatment area, medical history, and recent sun exposure before selecting the appropriate laser wavelength and settings.

Tokyo Osaka Nagoya International Patients Welcome

The GentleMax Pro is a medical laser platform equipped with both a 755 nm Alexandrite laser and a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser. This dual-wavelength system allows us to adjust treatment according to the characteristics of the patient’s skin and hair rather than using the same settings for everyone.

The important point is not simply whether a clinic has a GentleMax Pro. Good laser hair-removal treatment depends on choosing an appropriate wavelength, output, pulse duration, spot size, cooling method, and treatment interval for each patient.

Medical Laser Hair Removal for International Patients

International patients are welcome at our clinics in Osaka, Tokyo, and Nagoya.

We assess your skin tone, hair thickness, treatment area, medical history, previous laser treatments, and recent sun exposure before determining whether treatment is appropriate.

English-language assistance may be available depending on the clinic and appointment date. If you require support in English, please contact us in advance.

Considering Medical Laser Hair Removal?

We can assess your skin tone, hair type, and treatment area and explain whether GentleMax Pro hair removal is suitable for you.

What Is the GentleMax Pro?

The GentleMax Pro is a medical laser platform manufactured by Candela in the United States. One of its major characteristics is that it combines two different laser wavelengths in a single system.

755 nm Alexandrite Laser

Alexandrite laser energy is strongly absorbed by melanin and is commonly used for dark, coarse hair, particularly in areas such as the underarms, legs, and bikini area.

1064 nm Nd:YAG Laser

The Nd:YAG wavelength penetrates more deeply and has lower melanin absorption than Alexandrite. It may therefore be selected for deeper follicles, beard hair, or patients in whom skin melanin needs to be considered more carefully.

Being able to select between two wavelengths gives the medical team greater flexibility when treating different hair depths, treatment areas, and skin tones.

However, no laser works equally well on every type of hair. Very light-coloured, white, grey, red, or extremely fine hair may respond poorly because laser hair removal relies on melanin in the hair.

For a broader explanation of medical laser hair removal, treatment mechanisms, and important precautions, please see our Medical Laser Hair Removal Guide.

How Does Medical Laser Hair Removal Work?

Medical laser hair removal works by directing laser energy toward melanin in the hair. The absorbed energy is converted into heat, which affects structures involved in continued hair growth.

1
The Laser Targets Melanin in the Hair
Darkly pigmented hair generally absorbs more laser energy than the surrounding skin.
2
Laser Energy Is Converted into Heat
The resulting heat affects structures associated with continued hair growth.
3
Treated Hair Gradually Sheds
Some treated hairs loosen and shed over the following one to three weeks.

Hair is continuously moving through different phases of its growth cycle. Laser hair removal is generally most effective on hair in the active growth phase, which is why a single session cannot treat every hair effectively.

A Doctor’s Perspective

In clinical practice, I do not think the goal should simply be to use the strongest possible laser setting. What matters is delivering enough energy to the hair while also considering the patient’s skin tone, recent sun exposure, hair thickness, treatment area, and tolerance.

Coarse, dark underarm or bikini-area hair often responds relatively well, whereas fine hair on areas such as the face, upper arms, shoulders, or back may require more patience and additional sessions.

What Results Can You Expect?

Can You Notice Results After the First Session?

Some patients notice treated hairs beginning to shed after the first session. Others notice that regrowth becomes slower or that the hair appears less dense.

However, one treatment cannot affect every hair because only a portion of hairs are in the laser-responsive growth phase at any given time.

Medical-grade laser energy + appropriate wavelength selection + repeated treatment according to the hair-growth cycle are what produce progressive hair reduction.

  • Many patients are satisfied after approximately five to eight sessions, although the number varies considerably between individuals and body areas.
  • Coarse, dark hair such as underarm and bikini-area hair often responds relatively well.
  • Beard hair can be deeper and denser and may require multiple sessions.
  • Fine facial, back, shoulder, and upper-arm hair may be more difficult to treat.
  • Some patients also notice improvement in follicular shadowing or pigmentation caused by repeated shaving or inflammation.

Improvement in skin tone or pigmentation is not guaranteed. Laser hair removal should not be considered a substitute for treatment specifically designed for pigmentation concerns.

Is GentleMax Pro Hair Removal Painful?

GentleMax Pro Dynamic Cooling Device

Laser hair removal is often described as feeling similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin.

Discomfort varies depending on the treatment area, hair density, hair thickness, wavelength, energy settings, and the individual patient’s sensitivity.

Areas with dense, coarse hair, such as the beard, underarms, or bikini area, tend to be more uncomfortable than areas with sparse hair.

Dynamic Cooling Device

The GentleMax Pro uses a Dynamic Cooling Device, commonly called DCD. A short burst of cooling gas is delivered immediately before each laser pulse.

This cooling helps protect the surface of the skin and can reduce discomfort during treatment.

How We Reduce Discomfort
  • Dynamic cooling immediately before the laser pulse
  • Adjustment of laser settings according to the area and hair characteristics
  • Careful treatment of sensitive areas
  • Topical anaesthetic cream when appropriate
  • Nitrous oxide sedation may be available depending on the clinic and treatment area

If you are particularly concerned about pain, please tell us before treatment.

How Many Sessions Are Needed?

Multiple sessions are required because only a proportion of hairs are in the active growth phase at the time of each treatment.

Typical Number of Sessions Approximately 5–8 sessions, although some areas require more
Typical Interval Approximately every 1–2 months
Areas That May Need More Sessions Face, back, shoulders, upper arms, and other areas with finer hair
Maintenance Occasional additional treatment may be considered if residual or new hair appears

Treatment intervals are adjusted according to the treatment area, hair-growth cycle, and how quickly regrowth occurs.

Hormonal factors, age, medications, hair colour, skin tone, hair thickness, and the treatment area can all influence how many sessions are required.

Who May Benefit from GentleMax Pro Hair Removal?

  • You want to reduce dense or coarse unwanted hair
  • You are concerned about hair on the face, arms, legs, back, underarms, or bikini area
  • You want medically supervised laser hair removal
  • You want to reduce the need for frequent shaving, waxing, or plucking
  • You experience irritation, folliculitis, or pigmentation after repeated shaving
  • You want treatment settings selected according to your skin tone and hair characteristics

Skin Tone, Tanning, and the Choice of Laser

Skin tone matters because medical laser hair removal targets melanin. If a significant amount of laser energy is absorbed by melanin in the skin rather than the hair, the risk of burns or post-inflammatory pigmentation may increase.

The GentleMax Pro gives us the option of using either Alexandrite or Nd:YAG wavelengths. Nd:YAG generally has lower melanin absorption and may be considered for some patients with darker skin tones.

However, this does not mean that every patient with tanned or darker skin can automatically undergo treatment. The skin must still be assessed before treatment.

Recent Sun Exposure Is Important

Treatment may need to be postponed if the skin is actively sunburned, red, peeling, inflamed, or significantly tanned. Please tell us about recent sun exposure when booking.

GentleMax Pro Compared with Other Hair-Removal Devices

There is no single laser device that is automatically best for every patient. Different wavelengths and treatment methods have different characteristics.

Device Type Laser / Method Typical Characteristics
GentleMax Pro 755 nm Alexandrite + 1064 nm Nd:YAG Two wavelengths, adjustable settings, dynamic cooling, and flexibility across different treatment areas
Alexandrite Laser 755 nm wavelength Often highly responsive to dark, coarse hair in patients with relatively lighter skin
Nd:YAG Laser 1064 nm wavelength Deeper penetration and lower melanin absorption than Alexandrite; may be useful for deeper follicles and some darker skin tones
Diode Laser Diode wavelength Characteristics vary significantly according to the specific device, wavelength, output, and treatment method
Beauty-Salon Light Treatment Lower-output light-based treatment Generally intended for temporary hair reduction or slower regrowth

The most appropriate treatment cannot be determined from the device name alone. Skin tone, hair thickness, hair depth, treatment area, recent sun exposure, medical history, and treatment goals all matter.

Downtime and Possible Side Effects

Medical laser hair removal can cause temporary reactions in the treated area.

Common Temporary Reactions
  • Redness or warmth
  • Mild swelling around the follicles
  • Stinging or tenderness
  • Temporary dryness or sensitivity
Less Common or Rare Reactions
  • Blistering or burns
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Hypopigmentation
  • Acne-like eruptions or folliculitis
  • Scarring
  • Paradoxical hair growth in or around the treated area

Mild redness and follicular swelling usually improve within several hours to a few days.

Please contact the clinic if you develop severe pain, blistering, marked swelling, discharge, persistent redness, or worsening symptoms.

Aftercare

Important Instructions After Laser Hair Removal

Sun Protection
Avoid excessive ultraviolet exposure and use sunscreen on exposed areas. Sun exposure can increase the risk of burns or post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Moisturising
The skin may temporarily become dry or sensitive after treatment. Apply a gentle moisturiser and avoid irritating skincare products.

Baths, Exercise, Alcohol, and Saunas
Avoid very hot baths, saunas, strenuous exercise, and excessive alcohol on the day of treatment, because heat and increased blood circulation can worsen redness.

Rubbing and Scrubbing
Avoid vigorous rubbing, exfoliating scrubs, and peeling products until redness and sensitivity have settled.

Hair Removal Between Sessions
Shaving is generally acceptable, but avoid plucking, waxing, or epilators. The laser requires pigment within the hair follicle in order to work.

Do Not Force Treated Hair to Shed
Treated hairs may gradually loosen and fall out. Do not pull them or aggressively scrub them from the skin.

Who Should Avoid Treatment or Seek Medical Advice First?

  • Patients who are pregnant or may be pregnant
  • Patients with active infection, open wounds, severe eczema, or significant inflammation in the treatment area
  • Patients with recent intense sun exposure or active sunburn
  • Patients taking medication that can increase photosensitivity
  • Patients with a history of severe light sensitivity
  • Patients with certain seizure disorders triggered by flashing light
  • Patients with tattoos or permanent makeup directly within the treatment area
  • Patients with a history of severe keloid formation or abnormal wound healing

Please tell the doctor or nurse about all medications, supplements, allergies, medical conditions, previous laser treatments, tattoos, and recent sun exposure before treatment.

Do not stop prescription medication without consulting the doctor who prescribed it.

How Much Does GentleMax Pro Hair Removal Cost?

Treatment fees depend on the body area and clinic. Please see our current medical laser hair-removal price list for available treatment areas and fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many GentleMax Pro sessions will I need?

Many patients require approximately five to eight sessions, although the number varies according to the treatment area, hair density, hair thickness, hormonal factors, skin tone, and individual response. Fine facial or body hair may require more treatments.

Can I see results after one session?

Some treated hairs may begin to shed after one session, and regrowth may feel slower or less dense. However, repeated treatments are necessary because not every hair is in the active growth phase at the same time.

How painful is GentleMax Pro hair removal?

The sensation is often compared with a rubber band snapping against the skin. Dense, coarse hair in areas such as the beard, underarms, or bikini area can be more uncomfortable. The GentleMax Pro uses dynamic cooling, and anaesthetic options may be available when appropriate.

Does GentleMax Pro work on darker skin tones?

The GentleMax Pro includes a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser, which has lower melanin absorption than the Alexandrite wavelength and may be selected for some patients with darker skin tones. However, treatment suitability and settings must be assessed individually.

Can I have laser hair removal if I am tanned?

Treatment may be possible in some patients with mild tanning after assessment. However, treatment should generally be postponed if the skin is actively sunburned, red, peeling, inflamed, or significantly tanned.

Does GentleMax Pro work on facial or fine hair?

Some facial and fine hair can respond, but very fine or lightly pigmented hair is generally more difficult to treat than coarse, dark hair. Additional sessions may be required, and extremely fine hair may show limited improvement.

Should I shave before my appointment?

In most cases, the treatment area should be shaved before the appointment. This allows laser energy to be directed toward the hair within the follicle rather than long hair above the skin. Please follow the instructions provided by the clinic for your treatment area.

What should I avoid after treatment?

Use sun protection and moisturiser, and avoid excessive heat, strenuous exercise, saunas, very hot baths, scrubs, and strong friction until redness and sensitivity have settled.

How much does GentleMax Pro hair removal cost?

Fees depend on the treatment area and clinic. Please see our current hair-removal price list for details.

Can international visitors receive treatment?

Yes. International patients are welcome at Houreisen Skin Clinic. When contacting us, please tell us your preferred clinic, desired appointment date, treatment area, recent sun exposure, previous laser treatments, medical history, and whether you require English-language assistance.

Summary: GentleMax Pro Hair Removal in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya

The GentleMax Pro is a medical laser platform equipped with both 755 nm Alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelengths.

This dual-wavelength system allows treatment to be adjusted according to hair thickness, hair depth, skin tone, and the treatment area.

In my view, the device itself is only one part of good laser hair removal.

The wavelength, output, spot size, pulse duration, cooling, skin tone, hair characteristics, recent sun exposure, treatment interval, and the judgement of the medical team all matter.

GentleMax Pro may be a suitable option for patients seeking medically supervised treatment for beard hair, bikini-area hair, underarm hair, facial hair, or unwanted body hair.

However, results vary between individuals, and very fine, white, grey, red, or lightly pigmented hair may respond poorly.

At Houreisen Skin Clinic, we assess your skin and hair condition before recommending treatment.

Ready to Discuss Laser Hair Removal?

International patients are welcome at our Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya clinics. You are welcome to ask whether GentleMax Pro is suitable for your skin tone, hair type, treatment area, and travel schedule.

Treatment effects, discomfort, required number of sessions, and downtime vary between individuals.

Medical laser hair removal is intended to achieve long-term hair reduction. Complete and permanent removal of every hair cannot be guaranteed.

Laser settings and treatment eligibility are determined after assessment of the skin, hair, medical history, medications, and recent sun exposure.
