What Is POTENZA Prime? Differences from POTENZA, Advanced Drug Delivery, RF Technology, Benefits, and Cost

Hello, I’m Dr. Hideaki Saito from Osaka Houreisen Skin Clinic.

How is POTENZA Prime different from the original POTENZA?

And if the same skin-rejuvenating product is used, does choosing the newer device really make a difference?

POTENZA Prime is built on the same core principles as the original POTENZA—microneedling combined with radiofrequency energy—but introduces refinements to both its drug-delivery system and the way RF energy is delivered through the treatment tip.

Drug delivery refers to delivering a selected skin-rejuvenating product through microscopic channels created by the microneedles during treatment.

At our clinic, we do not base treatment quality on the age of the device alone. We also consider how the product is delivered, how much is used, and how the treatment settings are adjusted to the patient’s skin.

Two POTENZA Prime Upgrades—Plus One Feature of Our Protocol

POINT 1
Boost Mode

Designed to improve product-delivery efficiency by approximately two to three times under specified test conditions

POINT 2
Updated RF Delivery

The newer non-insulated tip can deliver RF energy along the full inserted length of the needle

POINT 3
At our clinic: one full vial per treatment

Approximately two to three times the amount commonly used per session, based on our clinic’s review

Important: Results vary depending on skin condition, product choice, treatment settings, and the number of sessions performed.

POTENZA Prime Treatment in Japan

International patients are welcome at our Osaka clinic.

POTENZA Prime may be considered for patients concerned about acne scars, enlarged pores, uneven texture, fine lines, or reduced firmness.

A doctor will assess your skin condition and recommend an appropriate treatment tip, product, needle depth, and RF settings based on your concerns, available downtime, and length of stay in Japan.

English-language assistance may be available depending on the appointment date. Please contact us in advance if you require support in English.

For Patients Who Want to Address Pores or Acne Scarring Through Both Device Technology and Product Delivery

At our Osaka clinic, we assess your skin before recommending the appropriate POTENZA Prime tip, product, and settings. You are welcome to book a consultation even if you are not ready to proceed with treatment.

What Does “Drug Delivery” Mean in POTENZA Treatment?

POTENZA uses fine microneedles to enter the skin and deliver radiofrequency energy beneath the surface.

The treatment works through three complementary mechanisms:

1
Controlled Microneedle Stimulation
Microscopic needle channels stimulate the skin’s natural repair response and support skin remodelling.
2
Radiofrequency Heat
RF energy is delivered beneath the skin surface to support collagen remodelling and skin tightening.
3
Selected Products Such as McCoom or Juvelook
The microchannels created by the needles are used to distribute a product selected for the patient’s main skin concern.

Drug delivery is therefore more than simply applying a product to the surface of the skin. It combines microneedle stimulation, RF energy, and a selected skin-rejuvenating product to address concerns such as acne scarring, enlarged pores, uneven texture, and reduced firmness.

For an overview of the original device and our clinical cases, please see our complete guide to POTENZA.

POTENZA vs. POTENZA Prime

The original POTENZA already includes drug-delivery treatment using a dedicated pumping tip. It would therefore be inaccurate to say that product delivery was unavailable with the earlier device.

POTENZA Prime retains that underlying concept while adding Boost Mode and a newer drug-delivery tip with a different RF-delivery profile.

Feature Original POTENZA POTENZA Prime
Core Technology Microneedling plus RF Uses the same core principles
Product-Delivery Mechanism Dedicated pumping tip Additional needle movement through Boost Mode
Product-Delivery Efficiency Conventional method Approximately two to three times higher under specified test conditions※1
RF Delivery Through the Drug-Delivery Tip Primarily from the exposed area near the needle tip The newer non-insulated tip can deliver RF along the full inserted length of the needle
Product Volume Varies by clinic and protocol Our clinic uses one full vial per session※2

The comparison above refers mainly to drug-delivery tips and should not be interpreted as a comparison of every POTENZA tip or treatment mode.

Upgrade 1: Boost Mode Creates Additional Microchannels

One of the most notable features of POTENZA Prime drug-delivery treatment is Boost Mode.

In addition to delivering RF energy, Boost Mode repeats the needle-insertion movement to create more microscopic pathways for the selected product. The goal is to improve how efficiently the product is distributed through the treated skin.

How Boost Mode Works

STEP 1
Microneedles and RF
Delivers controlled needle stimulation and RF heat
+
STEP 2
Additional Needle Movement
Creates extra microscopic pathways for product delivery
RF treatment and product delivery are integrated into a single procedure

According to manufacturer-provided materials, this approach improved product-delivery efficiency by approximately two to three times under specified comparison conditions.

This does not mean that clinical results will automatically be two to three times greater. Actual results depend on the product used, the treatment settings, the patient’s skin condition, and the number of sessions performed.

Upgrade 2: RF Delivery Along the Full Needle Length

The second major development is the newer non-insulated drug-delivery tip.

With conventional drug-delivery tips, RF energy was delivered mainly from the exposed portion near the needle tip. With the newer POTENZA Prime tip, the uncoated needle can deliver RF energy along its full inserted length.

RF-Delivery Pattern Where Heat Is Delivered Treatment-Planning Feature
Tip-Focused RF Concentrates heat around the selected treatment depth Useful when targeting a specific layer
Full-Needle RF Delivers energy along the inserted needle path, from more superficial to deeper layers Allows broader treatment across multiple skin depths

Rather than concentrating RF energy only near the needle tip, this approach distributes energy along the area occupied by the needle. This allows treatment across a broader vertical range of the skin.

The appropriate needle depth and RF settings must still be adjusted according to the treatment area, skin thickness, and the patient’s main concerns.

Our Protocol: One Full Vial Per Treatment

To make full use of POTENZA Prime, the device matters—but so do the selected product and the amount used.

Product volume and dilution methods vary between clinics and treatment protocols. At our clinic, we use one full vial of either McCoom or Juvelook during a single treatment session.

More efficient delivery is paired with a generous treatment volume

Based on our clinic’s review, this is approximately two to three times the amount commonly used per session.※2

Even when a device creates efficient pathways for product delivery, using too little product may limit how evenly the full treatment area can be covered.

For this reason, we do not divide one vial into small portions for several patients or sessions. We use the entire vial in one session so that an appropriate amount can be distributed carefully across the full treatment area.

However, more product is not automatically better. The product, concentration, dilution, treatment area, and the patient’s skin condition must all be considered.

Our POTENZA Prime Protocol

Boost Mode
Creates additional delivery pathways
×
Full-Needle RF

×
One Full Vial
Treatment volume is part of the protocol

We approach skin rejuvenation through both device settings and product delivery.

When Comparing POTENZA Treatments, Do You Know How Much Product Is Being Used?

We explain the selected product, treatment volume, needle depth, and RF settings before proceeding.

McCoom or Juvelook: Which Product Is Right for You?

In drug-delivery treatment, product selection is just as important as the device. At our clinic, we primarily use McCoom and Juvelook.

Product Main Ingredient Primary Treatment Goal Common Concerns
McCoom
PLLA
Poly-L-lactic acid Supports collagen production and helps improve uneven skin texture Acne scars, depressed scars, and prominent pores
Juvelook
PDLLA + HA
Poly-D,L-lactic acid and non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid Supports firmness, texture, and overall skin quality Visible pores, fine lines, reduced firmness, and uneven texture

McCoom is not automatically the right choice for every acne scar, nor is Juvelook automatically the best option for every patient with enlarged pores.

We assess scar depth, skin thickness, active inflammation, sensitivity, and the type of improvement you are hoping to achieve before selecting the product.

For a detailed comparison, please see our article on Juvelook vs. McCoom.

What Is the VMLS Tip?

The VMLS tip is a separate POTENZA Prime treatment option and does not involve McCoom or Juvelook drug delivery.

It is designed for concerns such as melasma, facial redness, dullness, uneven skin tone, and overall skin brightening.

The treatment may be suitable for patients who want to improve uneven pigmentation or redness while keeping downtime relatively limited.

VMLS is a treatment tip, not an injectable product.
McCoom and Juvelook are used in drug-delivery treatments, while VMLS uses a different treatment approach for pigmentation, redness, and uneven tone.

To mark the introduction of POTENZA Prime, we are currently offering a limited-time monitor campaign.

  • You have previously had conventional POTENZA and now want greater emphasis on product delivery
  • You want product volume and treatment settings to be part of your decision when comparing clinics

How Many Sessions Are Recommended?

Some patients notice changes in skin firmness, radiance, or texture after one treatment. However, acne scars, depressed scarring, and enlarged pores are rarely corrected with a single session.

Recommended Course Three or more sessions may be recommended depending on the concern
Treatment Interval Generally every four to six weeks, depending on the skin condition and treatment settings
When Changes May Develop Gradually over several weeks as the skin remodels

The recommended number and interval of treatments vary according to the depth of acne scarring, skin thickness, product used, treatment settings, and individual response.

Is POTENZA Prime Painful?

POTENZA Prime uses multiple microneedles and RF energy, so patients may feel repeated pinpricks, heat, pressure, or stinging during treatment.

Pain varies according to the treatment area, needle depth, RF output, and individual sensitivity.

How We Reduce Discomfort

  • Topical anaesthetic cream before treatment
  • Adjustment of needle depth and RF settings according to the treatment area
  • Careful pacing during sensitive areas
  • Cooling and post-treatment skin care when appropriate
  • Communication throughout the procedure

Please inform us during your consultation if you are particularly concerned about pain.

Downtime and Possible Side Effects

After treatment, you may experience the following temporary reactions:

Common Temporary Reactions
  • Redness, swelling, or warmth
  • Stinging or tenderness
  • Pinpoint bleeding or bruising
  • Dryness or fine crusting
Other Possible Reactions
  • Temporary acne flare or skin irritation
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Infection or worsening inflammation
  • Allergic reaction to a product or aftercare item

Redness and warmth commonly improve within one to three days, although dryness, roughness, or fine crusting may continue for several days.

Bruising and post-inflammatory pigmentation may take longer to resolve. The severity and duration of downtime vary between individuals.

Contact the treating clinic if you develop severe pain, marked swelling, blistering, discharge, fever, worsening redness, or other concerning symptoms.

For more information, please see our guide to post-POTENZA reactions and aftercare.

For patients visiting Japan
If you have an important event, professional photo session, or flight shortly after treatment, please discuss your schedule with us in advance. Allowing approximately one to two weeks before an important event may be advisable in case redness, dryness, or bruising occurs.

Aftercare

Important Instructions After Treatment

Showering
You may shower on the day of treatment. Avoid very hot water and prolonged bathing.

Face Washing and Makeup
Face washing with a cleanser and makeup may generally be resumed 12 hours after treatment. Use clean hands and avoid rubbing or scrubbing the treated skin.

Baths, Alcohol, Exercise, and Saunas
Avoid long baths, alcohol, saunas, and strenuous exercise on the day of treatment, as increased blood circulation may worsen redness or swelling.

Massage and Friction
Avoid strong massage, pressure, scrubs, or treatments that irritate the skin for approximately one week.

Sun Protection
Use sunscreen and avoid excessive ultraviolet exposure. The skin may be more sensitive to pigmentation after treatment.

Skincare
Use gentle moisturising products. Temporarily avoid retinoids, strong acids, exfoliants, peeling products, and other irritating skincare until redness and sensitivity have settled.

Who Should Avoid POTENZA Prime or Seek Medical Advice First?

  • Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Patients with active infection, severe acne inflammation, open wounds, or active skin disease in the treatment area
  • Patients with a pacemaker, implanted electronic medical device, or certain metal implants
  • Patients with a history of severe keloid formation or abnormal wound healing
  • Patients taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication
  • Patients with a serious underlying medical condition or poorly controlled immune disease
  • Patients with a known allergy to the product planned for drug-delivery treatment

Please inform the doctor about all medications, supplements, allergies, implants, medical conditions, and previous cosmetic treatments before the procedure.

Do not stop prescription medication without consulting the doctor who prescribed it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I see results after one session?

Some patients notice improved firmness, radiance, or texture after one treatment. Acne scars, depressed scarring, and enlarged pores, however, are rarely corrected in a single session. A course of treatment may be recommended depending on your skin condition.

If product-delivery efficiency is two to three times higher, are the results also two to three times better?

No. Improved delivery efficiency and clinical results are not the same measurement. Results also depend on the skin condition, selected product, needle depth, RF settings, treatment area, and number of sessions.

Is more product always better?

Not necessarily. The correct amount depends on the product, concentration, dilution, treatment area, and skin condition. At our clinic, one full vial is used as the amount we consider appropriate for full-face treatment with McCoom or Juvelook.

Does this mean the original POTENZA is ineffective?

No. The original POTENZA already combines microneedling, RF, and a pumping mechanism. POTENZA Prime retains that foundation while adding Boost Mode and a newer drug-delivery tip, giving doctors more options when product delivery is a priority.

Which is better, McCoom or Juvelook?

McCoom may be considered when acne scars and depressed texture are the main concerns. Juvelook may be considered when the goal is to improve pores, fine lines, firmness, and overall skin quality. The most appropriate option depends on your skin assessment.

Is the VMLS tip the same as drug delivery?

No. VMLS is a separate treatment tip used for concerns such as melasma, facial redness, dullness, and uneven skin tone. McCoom and Juvelook are products used during drug-delivery treatment.

How long is the downtime?

Redness, warmth, and swelling often improve within one to three days. Dryness, roughness, or fine crusting may continue for several days. Bruising or post-inflammatory pigmentation may take longer to settle.

When can I wash my face or apply makeup?

A shower is possible on the day of treatment. Face washing with a cleanser and makeup may generally be resumed 12 hours after treatment. Please follow any individual instructions provided after your procedure.

Can international visitors receive POTENZA Prime?

Yes. International patients are welcome at our Osaka clinic. Please contact us in advance and provide your desired appointment date, skin concerns, previous treatments, length of stay in Japan, and whether you require English-language assistance.

Can I fly after treatment?

Flying is generally possible after treatment. However, redness, dryness, swelling, or bruising may still be visible. Please discuss your travel schedule with us in advance, particularly if you plan to leave Japan shortly after treatment.

Summary: Effective Treatment Depends on More Than the Device Name

POTENZA Prime is not simply a cosmetically updated version of the original device.

Boost Mode creates additional microscopic pathways for product delivery, while the newer non-insulated tip can deliver RF energy along the full inserted length of the needle.

These features are designed to integrate product delivery and RF treatment more efficiently. However, device specifications alone do not determine the clinical outcome.

The quality of a POTENZA treatment is not determined by the device name alone.

The treatment tip, needle depth, RF output, product selection, treatment volume, skin condition, and overall treatment plan all matter.

At our clinic, we combine Boost Mode, full-needle RF delivery, and one full vial of McCoom or Juvelook when performing full-face drug-delivery treatment.

If you are concerned about acne scarring, enlarged pores, reduced firmness, uneven texture, melasma, or facial redness, a doctor will assess whether POTENZA Prime is appropriate and explain suitable alternatives when necessary.

Considering POTENZA Prime?

You are welcome to ask which treatment may suit your skin, how many sessions may be needed, or what downtime to expect.

When contacting us, please include your desired appointment date, main concerns, previous cosmetic treatments, length of stay in Japan, and whether you require English-language assistance.

※1 Based on manufacturer-provided comparison data under specified conditions. Actual product delivery and clinical outcomes vary depending on the product, treatment tip, settings, treatment area, and skin condition.

※2 Based on our clinic’s review of commonly used per-session volumes. Dilution methods and product volumes differ between medical providers, so this should not be interpreted as a comparison with every clinic.

Treatment effects and downtime vary between individuals. No cosmetic medical treatment can guarantee a specific result.
